Avoid Fraud and Phishing Scam

California Secretary of State issued an alert that official–looking emails offering fraud compensation awards are being sent to Californians. These emails are not from the Secretary of State and may be part of an identity theft scam. Here you will find resources for reporting suspicious emails and the appropriate government agencies to contact if you have been a victim of an Internet email scam.

Phishing scams are typically fraudulent email messages appearing to come from legitimate enterprises (e.g., California Secretary of State, your university, your Internet service provider, your bank).

These messages usually direct you to a fraudulent web site or get you to private your private information (e.g., your password, credit card, or some account information). The perpetrators then use this private information to commit identity theft.

One type of phishing attempt is an email message stating that you are receiving it due to fraudulent activity on your account, and asking you to "click here" to verify your information.

These scams often attempt to trick recipients into responding or clicking immediately, by claiming that recipient may lose something if he does not act right away. Generally, responsible companies and organizations will never take such actions via email.
